Silicone vs monocouche render — which is better in 2026?
Both are popular external render systems. Here's when to use silicone, when monocouche wins, and what to avoid.
Silicone vs monocouche: which render should you use?
If you're getting a quote for external rendering in 2026, your builder will almost certainly suggest one of two systems: silicone (silicone-silicate) or monocouche. Both give a coloured, low-maintenance finish — but they behave very differently.
Silicone render (also called silicone-silicate)
A thin-coat system applied over a base coat with embedded mesh. The top coat is factory-coloured, breathable and water-repellent.
Use it when:
- You're rendering over insulation board (EWI)
- The property is timber-frame or has any movement
- You want a wide colour choice and a fine texture
- The substrate is mixed (e.g. brick + blockwork)
Pros: Highly flexible, very breathable, self-cleaning to a degree, 25–30 year life.
Cons: Premium pricing — usually £55–£75/m².
Monocouche render
A through-coloured cement-based render applied in a single thick coat (15–20mm). Traditional in feel — closer to old-school sand-and-cement, but with colour built in.
Use it when:
- You're rendering directly onto solid masonry (brick or block)
- You want a slightly heavier, more "solid" look
- Budget is tight
Pros: Cheaper (£45–£60/m²), one-coat application, durable.
Cons: Less flexible — can hairline-crack on flexible substrates. Limited colour palette.
What to avoid
- Plain sand & cement painted over. Cheap, but cracks within 5 years and traps water.
- Render straight onto pebble-dash without mesh. It will fail.
- Anyone who skips the base coat & mesh on a thin-coat system. The mesh is what stops cracking. Non-negotiable.
Our default in Essex
For 80% of the work we do across Colchester, Chelmsford and the rest of Essex, silicone wins. The premium is small over the lifespan of the render and we rarely get callbacks for cracking.
